Artist Statement: #coffeewithvictoria
Smartphone-generated
‘virtual postcards’
sent from
coffee house sanctuaries;
offering
social networking snapshots
of personal freedom
and indulgence;
selfish moments
of solitary relaxation
and sensory therapy,
shared with notable faces
from contemporary print media.
Additional Notes:
My purpose is creativity in concept.
Pen, paper and stamp replaced by smartphone capture and communication. Words and images from moments of respite and re-charge, ‘posted’ to a digital universe.
The title of this work implies a social-media-savvy mindset. However, ‘Victoria’ is a reticent and sometimes resistant explorer of the fast moving digital landscape, so the hashtag serves as a mute and symbolic silent letter.
Volumes 1 and 2 present a nomadic coffee connoisseur’s visits to 99 unique hospitality establishments; accompanied by two dimensional and non-interactive random but recognisable subjects of present-day photojournalism.
I invite the curious to consider this work an experiment by an unconventional creative, combining love of cafe culture, current affairs, people-watching and solitary “chillaxing”, in the current playground of digital communication.
I encourage critics of frivolous expense to reflect on their choice of self-indulgence.
Finally, I offer reassurance that all purchases of beverage and confectionary were self financed; and where the facility allowed, all literary material featured was donated to the establishment for the benefit of other customers.

I should like to thank the privacy protecting and selectively sharing ‘Victoria’ for allowing me to take smartphone screenshots of her sporadic Facebook status updates, and share with the world via a designated Pinterest board (which includes links to the websites of all establishments visited), my Elfrida Osbert website, and printed as hard copy postcards in photographic collage.
I should like to recognise the talented ‘digital native’ who humoured her eccentricity and encouraged ‘Victoria’ to “keep going” with what began as a random photo with an out of character urban slang crazy caption during a ‘time out’ moment, and then turned into a purposeful, ongoing creative project.
Finally, I should like to acknowledge the contribution of ‘Victoria’s’ audience of ‘virtual friends’; the minority who interacted with the images on social media, and the majority who chose to remain digitally silent - communicating their following and support via encounters in person.
